Tech doc discussion: Water Pump Seal/Bearing Replacement

:hello: The water pumps casted portion that the ceramic seals cup seats/presses into is tapered so it's kind of hard to get a proper measurement. Take your measurement at the very tip of the lip. An old/used cup measures smaller in diameter than a new one. This is due to after pressing in a new one the water pumps body makes the over all diameter about 1/2 mm to 1 mm smaller. So when installing a used seal make sure you put a bead of a high quality type of sealant around the rim of the cup. I use the gray RTV. Also remember to wipe off any sealant the remains on the pumps body.

The link to the European source for the mechanical seal (GpzZone) has 2 sizes - small 32mm and large 35mm but they measure across the widest part of the aluminum part of the seal. Hope that helps.

Thanks again to everyone for the help on this project. Looks like everything went together fine and no leaks. In all, I spent $25 for all the parts, I used a local bearing and seal place for the bearings and oil seal. The mechanical seal (32mm outer ring dia) I ended up ordering online...see below

2 ea bearings-Nachi Quest --PN-6001-2NSE9 (can be ordered on Amazon)
1 ea oil seal-TCM Dichtomatic--PN-12X28X7TC-BX (can be ordered on Amazon also)
1 ea water pump mechanical seal set Kawasaki PN 49063-1002 or 49063-1055 (seal is the 32mm measured on outer rim, but technically fits 28.5mm seal bore dia). I purchased this seal from Caltric.com for $12

Cool, glad you got it sorted out and thanks for the info on the parts. Later.

Here are the prices each for the parts I picked up:

Inside seal: $6.50

C-clip: .12 Twelve cents

Bearings x 2 needed: $5.80

Oil seal 12-28-7 $1.06

O-ring $1.00

Total for complete set: $14.48 US

Anyone interested?
I would like to buy a complete kit for the pump rebuild, are you offering one for sale? My zl900 developed a leak underneath on shifter side and think pump probably the problem. Found a lot of oil had leaked out but oddly it didn’t lose all the oil. Is that common on a pump problem?
