It's ALIVE!!!!!!!

I read this in another post, wonder if that's a possibility with mine? 900 and 1000 cdi's are different though right?

I had the popping intermittent miss w/ good running when warming up etc. Went through all the carb rebuild/spark plug wire/coil replace/tank clean/switch-grounds-connection clean etc. Finally found through process of elimination that CDI box was partially fried. 1000 miles on the the $50.00 fleabay box and no problems.

Later.

You don't like your guages? I haven't seen it drop at higher rpms. I haven't taken it that high with the morgan hooked up. And when I rode it around the drive, I didn't notice it missing either. I'll check the carbs again - supposed to rain the rest of the week anyway. The guage hooked up to my 900 is usually in the 20-24 range. So I don't think it's the guage. Later.

Yep good call ignition can also cause these same types of readings. There is alot that can be told from a set of gauges....interpretation is the problem...its sort of a zen like art form....

No like my gauges fine....yours is nicer in my opinion....

Ahhh, I see, I'll keep that in mind. I think I have a spare cdi but I'm not sure if it's any good or if it's for the 900 or 1000. As long as no damage would occur it would be a quick and easy swap to at least eliminate that area. Later.

:rotf:Valve clearances can cause this too....sick of me yet....I got all sorts of answers we just don't know which one?:rotf:

I still think 16 is too low at idle however it depends on the gauges

Nah, I'm open to suggestions. I went through the valves before I got it running - took my time with them and think I got them set pretty good - I'll check them again as a last resort. Maybe try the cdi thing tomorrow then go through the carbs again first. That's what I don't get, why I'm only getting about 16 on my guages when my 900 was reading higher. I realize the number isn't everything - I've always heard just so long as they are all even or within 2 of each other. Thanks for all the input. Keep the ideas coming - hahaha. Later.

When it drops to zero, typically is a mechanically issue not fuel or ignition, they can lead to a variation or 2 or more Inches of Hg but USUALLY will not drop out. That being said The sneezing can cause this to drop out to zero, so it could be a lean misfire. The slow dropping off can be ign, fuel, or mechanical. The fact that they are all low would make me do a comp or leak down test just to eliminate what you can.

Throttle plates are open too far to compensate for the clogged up primary jets/bleeds/crcuits therefore giving poor vacuum reading

Oh look Jarney yet another possible cause!!!!!!!:rotf:

muffler bearing clogged with sunshine and rainbows :goodluck:

Yeah, nothing but rain here for the rest of the week.

Swapped out the cdi's - no change. So at least that part is eliminated. I'll pull the carbs again tomorrow. I'll try swapping some of the parts and see if it moves to a different carb. I've had bikes with carbs that were clean as a whistle but wouldn't run right, put in new jets, etc., and walla, runs like a top. Might try out the jets r us site and get some pilots - I don't have any extra's laying around. I'm also headed to harbor freight tomorrow to get that freakin' adapter that walked off for my compression tester and I'll try to do that as well. I'll have to buy a whole set up just to get the adapter - at least it's only $9 - hahaha. Later.

Did some searching on adapters and may try this instead for an adapter. Several sites say you can just use a spark plug that fits the spark plug hole on your bike. Remove the ceramic of the spark plug, tap the end where the ceramic was to fit your guage hose and tada, you have an adapter for your compression tester. I've got plenty of old spark plugs laying around but not sure I have the right size tap, I'll take a look at that after work today. Later.

Man I hate this town, went looking for the right size tap - nobody around here has one that big (14mm). Went ahead and looked for the adapter - needs to be 14mm female to 12mm male - nada. Been looking online and have only seen the Gunson and one at Snap-on ($17!!!!!!). Might be cheaper just to go ahead and get another kit with the right adapter in it. Probably be the weekend before I get anything done now. Later.

Ok, got ahold of an adapter. Here's the #'s I got.

180
140
100
180

That's what I'm getting - top number is cylinder #1, then #2, etc. So #3 is definitely out of range and #2 is getting low. Seems odd that 1 and 4 are so high. Useable range is 128 - 196. I'll put some oil in 2 and 3 tomorrow and check again and see what happens. Later.

Thats not good. Try to make sure the shrader valve is closing and not leaking a little since this is an unknown tool for you.
